Strong Cork Closing Quarter Sealed Victory over Tipperary

Cork found another level mid-way through the second half when they scored 1-05 without reply in a 10 minute spell to see off an audacious Tipperary outfit to claim back to back Munster Camogie Senior Championship titles at Cashel GAA on Saturday May 25th.

The first half proved an open and free flowing game with little separating the sides.  With the game barely a minute old Tipperary showed their intent when they pointed via Megan Ryan, however, Orla Cotter unerring on placed balls fired over her first of five a minute later to level proceedings.

Two Nicole Walsh frees in quick succession had Tipperary two clear on 5.  However, an unanswered Cork brace from Amy O’Connor and a fine Chloe Sigerson long range effort had the sides level six minutes later.

Tipperary took a three point lead when an Eibhlis McDonnell placed ball came back off the upright and Miriam Campion turned over the Cork defence who failed to clear their lines to blast to the net past Amy Lee on 13.

A brace from Player of the Match Linda Collins and a fine point off the stick of Katrina Mackey on the run had the sides all square 10 minutes from the short whistle.

However, two Walsh frees either side of an Orla Dwyer point witnessed the lead exchange and Tipperary hold the three point advantage on 26.

A minute later a pulsating goal from Amy O’Connor had the sides level for the fourth time when after a surging run down the right wing she unleashed to the roof of the net past Caoimhe Burke.

A Walsh free was quickly cancelled out by Katrina Mackey who levelled proceedings in added time to see the sides head to the dressing room 1-07 apiece.

Inside the second minute of the restart Campion got the final touch on an O’Dwyer goal ward bound shot that had beaten Lee but needed the slight guidance over the line to see Tipperary take the lead for the sixth time 2-07 to 1-07.

The lead was short lived however, as Collins proving a handful in the Cork attack blasted to the net to level before pushing Cork ahead by the slimmest a minute later with a super long range effort.  A further four points without reply courtesy of Lauren Homan, two Cotter frees and a fine Mackey effort had Cork five clear on 48.

A Grace O’Brien 45 metre free pulled one back for Tipp, however, when substitute Niamh McCarthy was on the end of a Collins pass she made no mistake to fire past Burke to push Cork seven clear and extinguish any Tipperary response that had been evident in the game to that point.

A superb Gemma O’Connor point from distance was cancelled out by Karen Kennedy before two Cotter frees either side of a Julia White point saw Cork take an impressive victory: Cork 3-17, Tipperary 2-10.
