Late McAndrew Point Seals Douglas victory
A late Eimear McAndrew point poached the victory for Douglas in this closely contested SE Systems Cork Camogie Round 3 fixture played at a blustery Castle Road on Sunday last.
Douglas trailed for 55 minutes of the game before Katrina Mackey pushed them one clear when she pointed a twenty metre free. However, the lead was short lived as Orla Cronin pointed a 35 metre free to tie up the proceedings a minute later.
On 61 Eimear McAndrew struck a ball from distance that forced the experienced Eimear White to shade it over the crossbar to give Douglas a one point advance in added time. Carbery had an opportunity to level deep in added time, however, a tricky tight angled free from 40 metres on the left wing from Cronin went right and wide of the target.
A Carbery brace inside the opening minute via Kate Wall and the lively Caroline Sugrue had Carbery showing intent from the outset. However, the experienced and influential Katrina Mackey pulled one back for Douglas when she slotted over a 20 metre free.
A Cronin free and Sugrue point had Carbery three clear on 6 before McAndrew split the posts to pull one back for the city side.
Wall split the posts to put a goal between the sides on 10, however, two minutes later Mackey finished a superb shot low to the bottom corner past White after a sublime build up between herself and Julia White that cut through the heart of the Carbery defence.
A Carbery brace courtesy of the lively and effective Moira Barrett and Ciara O’Sullivan pushed the divisional side two clear on the quarter mark. However, White and Mackey once again cut through the Carbery defence with great passing before Mackey slotted over and cut the deficit to the slimmest on 19.
Carbery opened up a four point lead on 22 when Sugrue put O’Sullivan through with a great pass and she unleashed a shot that gave Jessica Kavanagh no chance in the Douglas goal. A Cronin long range free stretched the Carbery lead to four before Sarah Fahy split the posts to pull one back for Douglas.
A Mackey tight angled 35 metre free cut the deficit to three just on the cusp of half time and saw Douglas head to the dressing room trailing 1-05 to 1-08.
Mackey cut the Carbery lead to two when she pointed a close range free before substitute Caroline Murphy collected a Douglas clearance and split the posts to restore the Carbery lead to three.
White and Sugrue exchanged points to maintain parity before Mackey had the Carbery lead down to two when she pointed a 25 metre free from the left wing.
White and Sugrue once again exchanged points before an unanswered Douglas brace via White and Pamela Mackey had the sides level on 1-11 eight minutes from time.
Mackey put the city side one clear for the first time in the game on 55 when she pointed a 20 metre free before Cronin cancelled it out with a 35 metre placed ball.
Mackey had a chance to push her side one clear, however, her shot hit the upright and went wide before Barrett witnessed her opportunity to steal a lead for Carbery also went wide of the target. With the game in the balance and both sides vying for victory it was McAndrew who pointed with a long range effort that was guided over by White in the Carbery goal to give Douglas the lead. Cronin had an opportunity to tie up proceedings and send the game to extra time, however, her tight angled placed ball went wide of the target and Douglas maintained their one point advantage to move onto a quarter final fixture on a scoreline of Douglas 1-13, Carbery 1-12.
