Formidable Carbery Overcome Challenge of Fellow Divisional side Muskerry
A dominant and formidable second half performance by Carbery over fellow divisional opponents Muskerry in the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship Preliminary Round fixture witnessed the West Cork outfit book a place in Round 1 against Cloughduv whilst Muskerry have been consigned through the backdoor route.
Amassing an impressive 1-23 from play with the only placed ball coming from the outstanding Orla Cronin, Carbery didn’t have it all their own way in carving out their eventual commanding victory on Sunday last.
In fact, they only held the lead twice in the opening 30 minutes. Their early lead came after Muskerry opened proceedings via Fiona Bourke inside the opening minute before a Carbery brace from Caroline Murphy and the energetic Tara Sheehan pushed Carbery one clear.
Muskerry hit a spell of dominance when they hit four unanswered points in a six minute spell. Orla Cremin, a Healy brace from play and a free, and a Ciara McCarthy effort saw Muskerry open up a three point lead after 11 minutes of play.
A Carbery brace via a Cronin 45 metre free and a Ciara O’Sullivan point cut the Muskerry lead to the slimmest on 12.
Healy, infallible on placed ball duty, pushed her side two clear when she slotted over a free before Cronin quickly cancelled it out to see Muskerry ahead 0-06 to 0-05 on 18.
Cronin and Healy exchanged points before Libby Coppinger, commanding at mid field, fired over her first of a personal tally of four to keep Carbery in close pursuit. With Muskerry never being more than three clear Julie Tarrant pointed before Sheehan responded to ensure the Muskerry lead remained with a one point advantage.
However, five minutes from the short whistle Caroline Murphy put Carbery in the lead for just the second time when she crashed to the net after an O’Sullivan pass put her through on goal and, Coppinger had three between the sides a moment later when she fired over after a surging run through the heart of the Muskerry defence.
Healy had the deficit cut to two when she pointed a 20 metre free before pointing a 45 metre placed ball after Eimear White in the Carbery goal pulled off a competent save to deflect out for the 45.
Sheehan had the final say of the half when she fired over her third from play to see her side lead at the break; Carbery 1-09, Muskerry 0-10.
Two super points from Cremin for Muskerry and O’Sullivan for Carbery before Healy with an excellent strike under pressure had Muskerry to within a point inside three minutes of the restart.
Coppinger had two between the sides when she pointed after a characteristic run through defence to see her side lead 1-11 to 0-12 after 36 minutes.
Cronin had the West Cork outfit six clear after she struck an exceptional four in a row in as many minutes without reply. Sheehan opened up the Carbery lead to seven when she pointed before Cronin in sublime form split the posts to see Carbery lead 1-16 to 0-12 on the three quarter mark.
Three unanswered Muskerry points from a Healy brace and a McCarthy effort had the Carbery lead cut to five heading into the closing 10 minutes.
However, a Carbery brace from Coppinger and O’Sullivan commanded the Carbery lead back to seven. Muskerry replied via substitute Leah Dineen, however, Sarah Burke quickly cancelled it out before a Sheehan and Cronin brace extended the Carbery lead to nine in the 58th minute.
Coppinger made it 1-23 to 0-16 when she pointed, before Muskerry rallied and forced White to pull off a fine save when Healy and McCarthy combined to see McCarthy unleash a shot on goal that White deflected off her line for a 45 metre free.
Healy converted the resultant 45 before Burke added to the Carbery tally in injury time to see Carbery take the victory; Carbery 1-24, Muskerry 0-17.
Carbery meet Cloughduv in Round 1 on July 26th next, time and venue to be confirmed. Whilst Muskerry await their Backdoor/Round 2 opponents from the Round 1 fixtures which take place July 23rd – 26th. Backdoor/Round 2 fixtures to be confirmed.
