Cork Continue Winning Streak
Cork continued their winning streak in the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 when they overcame a spirited Tipperary side at CIT on Sunday last. There was little separating the sides until Linda Collins fired to the net on 17 to push Cork five clear. Cork registered scores through eight different players in Contrast to Tipperary who were heavily reliant on the exception free taking of Cait Devane who tallied 11 of which 9 came from placed balls over the hour.
Devane opened the scoring when she split the posts before a Cork brace from Collins and Libby Coppinger saw Cork hit the front on 3. Devane and Orla Cotter exchanged frees before Megan Ryan drew Tipp level on 9 when she fired over from range. Two finely struck Amy O’Connor points either side of a Cotter long range effort saw Cork go three clear before Devane put over a 50 metre free on 14. Collins struck for goal on 17 after Orla Cronin found her with a pass 20 metres from goal. Still with some work to do Collins side stepped the defence and made no mistake in rattling the Tipperary net. Two Devane frees quickly followed to close the gap to just three 10 minutes from the short whistle. Four unanswered points from Cork saw them open up a seven point lead in as many minutes. Aileen Sheehan operating a wing back struck the first of the four, before Cotter from distance, O’Connor on the run and Lauren Homan drilled over the fourth to see Cork stamp their authority on the game on the cusp of half time. A brace of Devane 20 metres frees closed the scoring for the half with Tipperary trailing 0-08 to 1-10.
Within a minute of the restart Hannah Looney picked off a fine point before Laura Loughnane cancelled it out three minutes later. Collins drilled over a tight angled effort on 34 before Devane put over a 50 metre free to close the lead to five 1-12 to 0-10. Orla Cronin got on the score sheet on 44 after she was on the end of some great passing that started with Ashling Thompson in defence. Another Looney point saw Cork 1-14 to 0-10 ahead with 12 remaining. A Devane free from 65 metres sailed over before she pointed from play on 56 to once again cut the deficit to five. Two Cork goals either side of a Devane 35 metre free in the closing three minutes from O’Connor and Lauren Homan saw Cork close out the game in a flurry before Cotter rounded off the scoring with a 30 metre free. Cork registered their third consecutive win on a scoreline of Cork 3-15 to Tipperary 0-13.
