Star studded Carbery prove far too strong for senior debutants Mallow
Carbery showed they have the potential to be real Championship contenders in the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship after they recorded a comprehensive win over senior debutants Mallow in their round 1 game in Coachford on Sunday evening last.
Carbery, with the pick of every team in the division at their disposal lined out with an impressive array of players that feature on the intercounty scene. Indeed it was Cork and Enniskeane player Orla Cronin that got proceedings underway when she pointed a 20 metre free inside the opening minute. Four minutes later she split posts before pointing again on seven after a Libby Coppinger pass set her up to slot over. On nine minutes Colette Desmond goaled after she connected with a Claudia O’Donoghue save from Clara Crowley to see Carbery well in control and lead comfortably with 1-03 on the board. Two further points from Carbery through Caroline Murphy proving lively at top of the right and a Cronin free just inside 45 metres saw Carbery well clear on 14 with a 1-05 lead. Mallow registered their opening score on 15 through the hard working Bronagh Ganley when Emma Coakley picked her out with a fine pass, however, Carbery really got into their stride for the remaining 15 minutes of the half. Murphy pointed on 18 before Caroline Sugrue notched up 1-03 in a nine minute spell, as well as, Cronin who accounted for 2 placed balls from 45 and 30 metres and one from play to see Carbery well in control at the half way stage 2-12 to 0-01.
Five unanswered Carbery points within 13 minutes of the restart through Sugrue, Clara Crowley, Desmond x 2 and Cronin saw Carbery 2-17 to 0-01 ahead before Sugrue struck for goal on 44. Mallow having accounted for Valley Rovers in last year’s Senior B final to move up to the top grade of Camogie in Cork found the going tough but they must be commended in never giving up and remaining resolute as they grappled to come to terms with a very strong side. Murphy pointed either side of a Cronin goal before Moira Barrett slotted over to put Carbery 4-20 to 0-01 ahead with 12 minutes remaining. Ganley had a great opportunity to goal on 48, however, her sterling effort hit the side netting. Carbery notched up two more through Sugrue and Murphy before the hardworking Emily Fitzpatrick pointed from a Ganley pass to see Mallow register their second and final score before Carbery closed out the game with three more from Coppinger, Barrett and a Cronin 40 metre free to send Mallow via the back door route and Carbery onto Round 2 on a scoreline of 4-25 to 0-02.
