Cloughduv do enough to hold off Ballincollig

The second game of a Sunday double header in Castle Road saw Cloughduv do just enough to hold off the challenge of Ballincollig in the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship played on fast and dry surface under a blazing sun.

After Ciara O’Leary opened the scoring with a fine point, Cloughduv were awarded a penalty after just three minutes of play for a foul on Rachel Hurley.  Aoife Murray came forward from the Cloughduv goal and made no mistake when she blasted to the back of the net.  It took Ballincollig nine minutes to get on the scoreboard and they did so through an unerring Ashley Lovett on free taking duties to point a 20 metre free.  Suzanne Bateman pointed after some good Cloughduv teamwork up front, before Niamh O’Leary put over a 20 metre free.  Ballincollig remained resolute and Elaine Casey pointed after a fine run and pass from Aoife Cotter followed shortly after when Lovett put over a tight angled point.  Lovett pointed a 45 metre free to bring Ballincollig to within two on 16, however, it was to be 12 minutes before another score was registered and it came in the form of a Bateman goal when she found the net past Lisa-Marie O’Mahony in the ‘Collig goal.  Sarah Buckley at mid-field responded for Ballincollig when she fired over under pressure to bring ‘Collig back to within four with a minute to the short whistle.  In that minute Murray was kept busy in the Cloughduv goal, however, Ballincollig couldn’t find a way past and trailed at half time 2-03 to 0-05.

The second half resumed with Ballincollig playing against the strong wind and Lovett tapped over a 20 metre free before Denise Cronin slotted over two minutes later to close the gap to just two.  Ciara O’Leary pointed when she collected a long puck out from Murray to put three between the sides on 36.  Ballincollig showed some great passing movement when they combined to see Lovett pick off a point with 10 minutes remaining, however, O’Leary pointed a 20 metre free on 48 to open up a three point lead once again.  Two Bateman points either side of a Casey close range point saw Cloughduv open up a four point margin with 54 on the clock, however, two Lovett frees from 50 metres and 20 metres respectively, saw Ballincollig cut the deficit to just two with just one minute remaining.  Olivia O’Leary shot a great tight angled point to cut the Cloughduv lead to just one deep in added time, however, Cloughduv did just enough to hold out and weather a late ‘Collig rally to take the spoils on a score line of 2-07 to 0-12.
