Milford comfortably cruise past St. Finbarrs

Milford showed the experience and familiarity of winning over the last number of years when they comfortably saw off a tame St. Finbarrs challenge in the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship fixture played at a sun soaked Castle Road.

In the first of a double header it was St. Finbarrs who showed the earliest threat on goal when straight from the throw in they launched an attack on the Milford defense.  However, Rachel Myers was unfortunate that her shot when just left of the target, and Milford were let off the hook early on.  Two minutes later, however, Eimear O’Gorman made no mistake when she found the back of the Barrs net after an Emer Watson delivery into the danger area.  Watson slotted over a 45 metre free on 4 minutes before Keeva McCarthy pointed a 30 metre free to see the Barrs trail by a goal after five minutes.  Six minutes later the Barrs were awarded a penalty when Myers was fouled in front of goal after she collected a great Ciara Keating pass.  Gemma O’Connor stepped up to take the penalty, however, her blistering shot skimmed the crossbar for a point to pull St. Finbarrs back to within two of Milford.  A minute later Milford opened up a four point lead when O’Gorman found the net after Katie Galvin put her through with a great hand pass.  Three well worked unanswered points through Maria Watson, Dympna O’Brien and Emer Watson pushed Milford into an eight point lead on 16 giving them a real strangle hold on the game.  Watson and McCarthy exchanged frees before Milford once again went on a scoring spree with four unanswered points from Watson – 20 metre free, Laura Stack, Maria Watson and O’Gorman.  McCarthy shot over a 50 metre free in added time to see the half time score Milford 2-09, St. Finbarrs 0-04.

Within a minute of the resumption Stack split the posts before McCarthy responded for the Barrs when she slotted over from close range on 35.  On 36 Ashling Thompson delivered a testing ball which Spellman between the Barrs posts batted out, only for Watson to connect and send the sliotar back past her into the net to see Milford surge ahead 3-10 to 0-05.  Eimear Hurley, with her first touch upon being introduced pointed for St. Finbarrs before Watson cancelled it out two minutes later.  O’Connor and Stack then traded points before O’Connor slotted over a free on 20 metres.  Sarah Sexton had the final say when she rounded off the Milford scoring with a point five minutes from time to see Milford secure a first round victory on a scoreline of 3-13 to 0-08.
