SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship – Results Round Up

The Senior Championship has its first finalist after Glen Rovers overcame St. Catherines in a wet, showery and windswept Castle Road on Saturday last.  Also, Inniscarra overcame Douglas at the same venue to set up a mid week semi final clash with Milford for a repeat of last years Final in which Inniscarra were victorious.

In the opening game of the double header St. Catherines held a three point lead after nine minutes through Evelyn Ronayne, Orla Cotter – 50 metre free and a fine Aoife Hurley effort. It was to be 11 minutes before Catherines added another courtesy of the reliable and consistent Cotter when her long range free sailed over. Glen Rovers opened their account on 22 when Nicole O’Brien pointed a 35 metre placed ball. An O’Brien 20 metre free on 29 was cancelled out on 32 when Cotter pointed a tight angled 20 metre placed ball to see the half time score St. Catherines 0-05, Glen Rovers 0-02.

Six minutes after the resumption, and playing with the slight favour of the swirling wind, O’Brien cut the deficit to two when she landed a 50 metre free. Catherines responded immediately when Denise Twomeys puck out was caught by Cotter who then ran from deep to lay off a pass that set up Finola Neville to point.

On 44 Glen Rovers drew level when Micheala Hyde’s shot raised a green flag. Two minutes later a Cotter 20 metre free nosed Catherines ahead by the slimmest, however, Nora O’Riordan pulled one back to level it when she split the posts on 47. O’Brien pointed a 20 metre free on 54 to put the Glen one clear before Cotter pointed on 56 to see the sides level once again. A Glen brace in the closing minute through Emma Murphy and O’Riordan quashed Catherines ability to summon a response and Glen Rovers booked their place in the County Final on a score line of 1-07 to St. Catherines 0-08.

In another close and fiercely contested game Inniscarra overcame Douglas at the second time of asking but had to see out 20 minutes of extra time to so. With very little separating the sides in their first fixture and Katie O’Mahony firing over for Inniscarra to draw level this game threw up another tough assignment for both sides.

At half time of normal time Inniscarra lead by two 0-08 to 0-06.

Inniscarra scorers Joanne Casey 0-04 (0-04f), Niamh Dilworth 0-02, Aileen Sheehan 0-02

Douglas scorers Katrina Mackey 0-07 (0-05f), Julia White 0-02, Katelyn Holland 0-01, Sarah Fahy 0-01, Jessica O’Mahony 0-01

At full time of extra time Inniscarra 1-12, Douglas 0-14. Inniscarra finding the net in the 77th minute after Dilworth collected 30 metres from goal turned, fired and looked to have her shot going over, however, it came back off the upright and in the scramble that ensued Niah McCarthy managed to get the ball over the line, but not before the referee had to consult with his umpires. With consultations made the green flag stood and it gave Inniscarra a two point lead. Mackey pulled one back with a 20 metre free on 78, however Inniscarra held out to set up a Semi Final mid week fixture with Milford. A rematch of last years County Final in which Inniscarra were victorious. Time and venue to be confirmed for Wednesday 25.10.2017.
