Weekend Roundup of Fixtures & Results on the Club Scene

A busy weekend of fixtures commenced on Saturday in Castle Road with Watergrasshill and Ballyhea in the their Junior A Championship Semi Final replay at 11:00am.  At the second time of asking it was Watergrasshill who advance to face Na Piarsaigh in the final after overcoming Ballyhea with five points to spare, Ballyhea 0-09, Watergrasshill 0-14.

The second of three games played at Castle Road saw Douglas and Inniscarra finish all square on 14 points apiece in the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship Quarter Final.  It was Inniscarra who drew level with a Katie O’Mahony point on 61 after Katrina Mackey, who played a pivotal role in the Douglas attack, put Douglas ahead by the slimmest on 58 after collecting a pass from Julia White before splitting the posts.  At half time Douglas held the lead 0-08, Douglas 0-06.  The sides were level three times in the opening 30 minutes, with Douglas leveling on 8 through two Mackey points after Niamh McCarthy and Joanne Casey slotted over for Inniscarra.  Douglas went two clear on 15 courtesy of Joy Leo and a Mackey free.  Inniscarra drew level on 21 when Casey slotted over after a strong run, but not before slotting over a placed ball on 18.  Jess O’Mahony and McCarthy exchanged points to see the game tied at 5 points apiece with 5 to go to half time.  A Mackey effort on the run and two placed balls saw Douglas open up a three point lead before Casey pulled one back for the defending champions on 33 to see Inniscarra trail by 2 at half time.

Mackey opened up a three point lead after a Leo pass set her up to point, but a Casey 45 metre free had the lead cut to two on 37.  Mackey and Casey exchanged placed balls to see the score at Inniscarra 0-08, Douglas 0-10 on 42.  A minute later Treasa McCarthy had the lead cut to the slimmest after she fired over but a Mackey brace had the Douglas lead extended to three with 14 minutes remaining.  Try as Douglas might they couldn’t shake the shackles of Inniscarra and they once again had the lead cut to just one through a Casey 20 metre free and a Niamh McCarthy effort from close range to see Douglas lead by the slimmest 0-12 to 0-11 with 10 minutes remaining.  A Mackey 50 metre free was quickly cancelled out by a McCarthy point before a Casey 50 metre free on 58 had the sides level for the fourth time in the game 13 points apiece.  A moment later however, Mackey had the ball over the bar and with it a one point lead for Douglas.  Champions die hard however, and Katie O’Mahony struck in added time to take the game to a replay and give both sides another attempt to get past the quarter final stages.

Sunday saw a double header in the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior B Championship with Ballinhassig and Blackrock producing a thrilling second half which saw Ballinhassig come back from a 10 point half time deficit and give a courageous second half display.

Half time score Ballinhassig 0-04, Blackrock 1-12.

Blackrock shaded it by the slimmest on a scoreline of Ballinhassig 2-12, Blackrock 1-16 with Ballinhassig holding Blackrock to just 4 points in the second half whilst nothing up 2-07 of their own.  Their gallant efforts weren’t enough, however, as Blackrock were able to hold and defend their lead and with book a place in the Senior B final against Valley Rovers.

The second game saw Valley Rovers recover from a four point half time deficit Éire Óg 2-02, Valley Rovers 0-04 to book their place in the final on a scoreline of Éire Óg 2-03, Valley Rovers 1-08 and set up a final with Blackrock.
